It's taken its sweet time to edit, as it always happens when I decide to cover a song by Olivia (something about that overdriven effect they always put on her vocals, I swear, it's so hard to replicate for me), but I had the idea in January, and was incapable of figuring out how to translate the concept of "déjà vu" into Latin, so I did what any sensible person would do - ask Classics Twitter :) The last thing I expected was to get a response from an Oxford professor, though! Armand D'Angour, who teaches at Jesus College, was not only so cool as to literally make up the word on the spot, but also kind enough to let me use it in my translation, which made my week, not even kidding. I think he doesn't know this, but I actually follow his work ever since I stumbled upon this video about his work on the reconstruction of Ancient Greek music: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4hOK7bU0S1Y This was around 6 years ago and I couldn't even imagine uploading Latin covers on YouTube back then, so... The fangirling goes back quite a few years. Anyway, you should check out his responses to my initial tweet: “I imagine Cicero trying to describe the experience of déjà vu, and coming up with a suitable neologism. Just as we use French he would have used Greek. “aliquid aliquo modo prius a mente visum, quod fortasse παλίμνησιν apellare possumus”” “Or Ps-Lucretius: sicut et in somnis aliquid lustrare videmur, forte palimnesin Graeco sermone vocatam, quod prius occasum nobis notumque videtur…” You guys should definitely give him a follow, he often shares beautiful hexameters! Again, can't add links here, but you should definitely do further reading on Ancient Roman female performers! -Lastly, I referenced Catullus cause I found it hilarious how Olivia Rodrigo talked about Billie Joel as if he were some kind of underground artist who the other girl CAN'T POSSIBLY KNOW OF unless he's played her Uptown Girl.
